New York police have opened an investigation following the spread of online clips showing individuals descending into and climbing out of municipal sewer openings across Brooklyn and Queens. The footage, which appeared on social media in recent weeks, prompted authorities to look into what the men were doing beneath the streets.
According to 24ur.com, citing police sources, the individuals were allegedly searching underground for valuables. It remains unclear whether a single group is responsible for all the incidents or if multiple crews are involved.
The first report reached police last Thursday. A witness in Gravesend, Brooklyn, observed roughly eight people remove a manhole cover and disappear below ground. Approximately three hours later, the same individuals re-emerged and changed their clothing beside parked vehicles nearby.
About two hours after that initial call, officers received a second report. This time, the incident occurred in a different Brooklyn neighborhood. Multiple people entered a sewer opening, stayed underground for over two hours, then climbed out, got into a car, and departed. Authorities say the suspects could potentially face burglary charges if apprehended.
The city's Department of Environmental Protection issued a warning through a spokesperson, who told BBC that entering the sewer network is both illegal and extremely hazardous. The NYPD, meanwhile, told NBC that there is no cause for alarm. The department stated that specially trained emergency response personnel inspected the sewer system for any dangerous objects left behind and found nothing suspicious.
The investigation is ongoing.
