Teen arrested after shooting NYPD detective in Brooklyn early-morning incident

Google News MT — Crime (en) reports that an 18-year-old is in custody after shooting and wounding a New York Police Department officer shortly after 4 a.m. on 5 July.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the suspect approached four officers seated in an unmarked police vehicle. The officers exited the car and attempted to engage with him, at which point three of them discharged their weapons. The suspect was eventually subdued with a stun gun following a foot chase.

Detective Robert Karroll was struck in the back. He was wearing a bulletproof vest at the time and sustained a bruised back. A second officer suffered facial and shoulder bruises.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani said Karroll had been working a 12-hour holiday shift. Mamdani praised the city's officers and expressed relief that the incident did not result in more serious consequences.

In a separate nearby incident the same day, eight people — including four children — were shot during a cookout in Brooklyn.
