New York detective shot in back, suspect taken down with stun gun

Google News MT — Crime (en) reports that an 18-year-old man is in custody in New York after allegedly shooting and wounding a police officer in the early hours of 5 July.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the man approached four officers sitting in an unmarked police vehicle shortly after 4 a.m. The officers stepped out of the car and attempted to engage with him, at which point three of them opened fire.

The suspect fled on foot before being brought down with a stun gun.

Detective Robert Karroll was struck in the back, but his bulletproof vest absorbed the impact, leaving him with a bruised back. A second officer sustained facial and shoulder bruises.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani said Karroll had been working a 12-hour holiday shift at the time of the incident. Mamdani praised the city's police officers and said he was relieved the confrontation had not resulted in more serious consequences.

In a separate incident the same day in Brooklyn, eight people — including four children — were shot during a cookout nearby.
