A North Miami Beach police captain was taken into custody on Tuesday after Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office detectives executed a warrant for video voyeurism by a family member or authority figure, local10.com reports. Jose Maya, 40, is accused of placing a recording device beneath a bathroom door to film a 23-year-old victim without her knowledge.
According to the arrest warrant, the victim first became suspicious of Maya last year. She discovered him lying on the floor directly outside the bathroom door while she was showering. As she exited, she noticed a small black object under the door but initially mistook it for an insect, as she was not wearing her glasses or contact lenses.
Maya reportedly stood up quickly when she opened the door and claimed he had been adjusting a motion-activated night light nearby. The victim said she was suspicious but did not pursue the matter at the time.
Her suspicions persisted. She later told her mother after repeatedly noticing the same small object appearing under the door during showers. Her mother suggested setting up a cellphone in the adjoining laundry room to document what was happening.
That recording captured Maya placing a device under the bathroom door while the victim was inside. On June 28, the victim's mother confronted Maya directly, and he provided some form of admission, though his precise statements were redacted from the publicly released warrant documents.
Detectives said the mother informed the victim that one of the recordings showed her buttocks, while other footage was blurry. The victim formally reported the incident to law enforcement on Monday.
Maya was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center at approximately 7:50 p.m. Tuesday. As of Wednesday morning, he remained held on a $7,500 bond. Miami-Dade County Judge Mindy Glazer issued an order requiring Maya to have no contact with the victim should he post bond, and barred him from possessing any weapons or ammunition.
The North Miami Beach Police Department issued a statement acknowledging the arrest. "We remain committed to transparency, accountability, and upholding the highest professional standards for our community," the NMBPD said. Police Chief Juan Pinillos confirmed that Maya has been relieved of duty while the case proceeds alongside an internal investigation.
