A federal court in New York handed down a 30-year prison sentence to Chinese exile Guo Wengui for orchestrating elaborate financial scams that stripped thousands of people of hundreds of millions of dollars. Judge Analisa Torres also ordered the convicted businessman to pay $889 million in restitution to his victims.
Prosecutors established that Guo systematically deceived investors across the United States and worldwide. He raised funds by presenting himself as a fierce opponent of China's Communist Party, targeting individuals who shared his anti-CCP stance. Federal attorney Damian Williams stated that Guo exploited supporters' political convictions to enrich himself and his inner circle.
The ill-gotten gains funded an extravagant lifestyle. Court records show Guo acquired a 4,500-square-meter estate, a Ferrari worth $3.5 million, and a luxury yacht priced at $37 million. During the seven-week trial, one victim testified that Guo had "completely destroyed" her family's life.
Guo, once counted among China's wealthiest entrepreneurs, fled the country in 2014 amid anti-corruption sweeps ordered by President Xi Jinping. Associates close to him were detained, and Chinese authorities charged him with rape, kidnapping, and bribery. He relocated to New York, where he became a vocal critic of Beijing and cultivated ties with former Trump adviser Steve Bannon.
Throughout the proceedings, Guo maintained his innocence. He argued that Beijing fabricated the allegations to silence his criticism of Communist Party leaders and corruption. He also complained about alleged mistreatment in U.S. custody, claiming stomach ailments and vomiting — assertions prosecutors dismissed as staged.
Despite his claims, the jury convicted him on multiple fraud counts. Some supporters attended the sentencing and applauded Guo as he addressed the court, stating his purpose for coming to America was "to eliminate the CCP."
