Brooklyn Gunfight Leaves NYPD Detective Wounded, Teen Suspect in Custody
A New York Police Department detective was hit by gunfire during a confrontation in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, early on Sunday, according to Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch.
The episode began at roughly 4:14 a.m. while officers sat in an unmarked car. A young man, captured on camera clutching a weapon only minutes earlier, walked up to the vehicle. The law-enforcement personnel stepped out and tried to confront the armed individual.
During the exchange, three officers opened fire. The suspect was not wounded by the shots. After fleeing on foot, the 18-year-old was captured, subdued with a taser, and placed under arrest. Officers recovered a handgun.
One detective took a round to the rear of his protective vest, leaving him with a bruise. A second officer received bruises to the face and shoulder area. Both were brought to a medical facility and are anticipated to make a full recovery.
The unmarked police car showed damage from bullets piercing the front and back windshields, plus the passenger side.
Tisch explained that the officers' body cameras were off at the start because the situation erupted suddenly and without advance notice. The recording devices were switched on after the shots were fired.
