Eight individuals with ties to the University of Michigan have been indicted on federal charges alleging they plotted to intimidate high-ranking administrators and enterprises linked to the institution.
The FBI says the scheme unfolded between October 2023 and April 2025. Those purportedly singled out included the then-president, the chief investment officer, the provost, and Board of Regents members.
Jennifer Runyan, who heads the FBI Detroit Field Office, described how suspects allegedly clad in masks and hoods hurled harmful substances through residential windows and affixed threatening notes to doorways. She added that the group tried to erase proof of their actions.
Charges brought include conspiracy to transmit threats. The matter originates from demonstrations urging the university to divest from military contractors and Israeli firms because of the Gaza conflict.
Among those named is Mariam Odeh of Dearborn, who until April was employed by the Senate campaign of Democratic hopeful Abdul El-Sayed. El-Sayed has publicly questioned the prosecution, claiming the current administration dispenses justice selectively depending on political viewpoints. Source: The Detroit News
