A community in Manvel, Texas, is grieving the death of an eight-year-old boy who choked on a grape during snack time at school, actionnews5.com reports.

Nicholas Gray, a third-grader at Pomona Elementary, died on 10 February after the grape became lodged too far down his throat. School staff and emergency responders attempted to help him, but their efforts were not enough to save him.

On Saturday morning, dozens of friends, family members and teachers gathered at a local park to celebrate Nicholas' life. He was a Cub Scout and one of five siblings, remembered by those close to him as lighthearted and fun.

His mother, Kenzie Gray, addressed her son directly at the gathering. "I want you to know that in your absence, we'll never forget about you, we'll live in your name and we'll honour your name every day," she said.

Nicholas' father said his son had made a lasting impact in a short time. "I truly feel, yes, it was a short time, but Nicholas fulfilled his purpose," he said. "He was truly my angel."
