Architect receives triple life sentence for Long Island serial murders

A 62-year-old architect from New York was given three life sentences to be served one after another, plus an additional 25 years, for the slaying of eight women in the Gilgo Beach area.

The verdict came on Wednesday, June 17. Rex Heuermann had managed to avoid law enforcement for roughly three decades until investigators traced him through genetic material in 2022 and took him into custody the following year.

The eight victims were killed over a 17-year span stretching from 1993 to 2010. Authorities believe all of them worked in the sex trade.

Heuermann led a carefully concealed existence. To relatives and neighbors, he appeared as a devoted family man residing in a suburban house with his spouse—who has Swedish and Icelandic roots—and their two children. He ran an architecture practice in Manhattan. Yet when his loved ones traveled on holiday, he remained at home to carry out the homicides.

After spending three years behind bars, the defendant admitted guilt in April 2026.

His former wife, Asa Ellerup, reacted to the ruling through her lawyer, Bob Macedonio. Speaking to the New York Post, Macedonio relayed that Ellerup feels the defendant received his just deserts and that the penalty is entirely fitting. Her sympathies, he said, rest with those who lost their lives and with the relatives they left behind.
