Perry County standoff ends in arrest after woman left unconscious in yard
Zachary Conroy, 43, of Perry County, Pennsylvania, faces charges of attempted homicide and attempted rape after allegedly assaulting a female relative and then barricading himself inside a Church Street property for several hours on Monday night, local21news.com reports.
Two waste management workers were on scene when they spotted Conroy physically and sexually assaulting the woman in the yard. One of them pulled him off the victim, who was already unconscious. Conroy allegedly warned the workers, "get away from me I'm dangerous," according to his affidavit.
Conroy then retreated into a nearby house, naked, prompting a standoff with Pennsylvania State Police. The State Police Special Emergency Response Team eventually apprehended him after several hours.
During the arrest, Conroy attacked a State Police K-9. Troopers confirmed the dog was not seriously injured.
The female victim, described as a relative of Conroy's, suffered severe facial injuries and a shoulder injury. She was transported to Holy Spirit Hospital, where she is currently intubated in the ICU, troopers said.
In addition to attempted homicide and attempted rape, Conroy is facing aggravated assault, aggravated assault on law enforcement, resisting arrest, and other related charges. The Perry County District Attorney confirmed the arrest following the conclusion of the standoff.
Prior criminal history
This is not Conroy's first violent encounter with law enforcement. In 2024, he was shot by Marysville police officer Andrew Bustin after allegedly assaulting an elderly man and then charging at the officer. After being struck by multiple rounds, Conroy allegedly continued to attack Bustin and attempted to grab his firearm. Additional troopers were called to the scene, and after a 20-minute struggle, Conroy was taken into custody and transported to hospital.
He survived those injuries and was subsequently charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, resisting arrest, evading arrest on foot, and criminal mischief — the latter after he allegedly smashed a car window prior to police arriving. Officials later ruled the 2024 shooting justified.
