ICE Agents Shoot Dead Colombian Citizen in Maine; Petro Demands Justice
A 26-year-old man from Colombia died after being shot by officers with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement during a raid in Biddeford, a city in the northeastern state of Maine. The slain individual was later identified as Johan Sebastián Durán.
On Tuesday, Colombia's head of state, Gustavo Petro, publicly denounced the fatal incident. In posts on social platforms, he labeled the shooting a homicide committed by the U.S. government. Petro argued that the victim was treated as a lesser being without rights, despite being entitled to every protection afforded to any person simply by virtue of being human.
The Colombian leader instructed his country's consular officials in the United States to initiate all appropriate judicial measures. The goal, he said, is to fully investigate what transpired and secure justice for Durán's death.
Petro also issued a direct appeal to American President Donald Trump, urging him to address the matter with Colombia. He characterized Durán as a casualty of state-driven targeting and marginalization directed at a civilian group because of its ethnic and cultural background.
Meanwhile, Durán's relatives informed local news outlets that he had been residing with his spouse and their toddler. Family members maintained that his paperwork was in order and that he held down two separate jobs. His father, Omar Durán, spoke emotionally about his son's ambition and character, calling him a devoted child who had much to live for.
