The arrest followed a multi-week investigation by the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, detailed in a newly filed probable cause affidavit.
Deputies responded to reports of gunfire at 1597 Quail Lake Drive at approximately 4:37 p.m. On arrival, they found 13 spent .40 caliber shell casings alongside multiple .45 caliber casings and live rounds scattered across the parking lot. Vehicles and a building had been struck by bullets.
Dispute sparked the confrontation
According to witness statements, the incident began when a juvenile male made inappropriate comments toward a woman in front of her children. The woman contacted her boyfriend, who arrived shortly after with a friend. As the two men confronted the group of teens, one individual — identified as Francois, who was 17 years old at the time — drew a gun from his waistband and fired a round into the air. Additional shots followed from multiple locations within the parking lot. Both men fled in opposite directions as the gunfire continued, and each later told deputies they were confident Francois was among the shooters.
Three additional witnesses, interviewed separately, identified Francois from a photo lineup.
Photos, location data, and text messages
Investigators built their case against Francois through a combination of physical descriptions, social media activity, electronic records, and cellphone data. Photos recovered from his phone showed him earlier that same day wearing clothing matching witness descriptions exactly: a black hoodie, black sweatpants, and a distinctive Sprayground backpack. Other images found on the device appeared to show an injury consistent with a gunshot wound, taken the morning after the shooting.
Location data from Francois' cellphone indicated it disconnected from a WiFi network inside the apartment complex approximately 12 minutes before the first 911 call was placed. Call records obtained from Boost Mobile and AT&T showed his phone connecting to towers covering the shooting area during the precise timeframe in which gunfire was reported.
Detectives also say Francois exchanged text messages in the days that followed which appeared to reference the shooting. Investigators noted the language used is commonly associated with someone who believes law enforcement may be looking for them. He also changed his phone number the day after the incident.
Search warrant yields physical evidence
On January 7, members of the Tactical Unit located Francois leaving his residence on Osceola Drive and detained him under a search warrant. Inside the home, detectives recovered ammunition, firearm magazines, and a Sprayground backpack matching the one described by witnesses.
Francois denied any involvement in the shooting but acknowledged that people referred to him by the nicknames "V8" and "Valentino." Detectives noted several inconsistencies between his account and the cellphone records and digital evidence collected during the investigation.
Two counts of attempted first-degree murder
Following the investigation, the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office charged Francois with two counts of attempted first-degree murder with a firearm and one count of discharging a firearm in public. Investigators concluded that the totality of the evidence placed him at the scene and demonstrated that he actively participated in the gunfire.
