U.S. Capitol Police officers took a man into custody on Monday near the north entrance of the Capitol building in Washington, D.C. The arrest occurred around midday local time after the individual was allegedly found carrying a firearm prohibited inside the grounds.
According to CNN and reported by Observador, law enforcement surrounded an SUV with their weapons pointed at the driver. The man stepped out of the vehicle with his arms raised above his head and was subsequently placed in handcuffs.
The incident prompted an immediate shutdown of the north access point. Authorities announced that the area would remain sealed off while investigative operations continue. Staff members were advised to stay away from the zone until further notice.
Officials have not yet released the identity of the individual detained.
