A driver in a stolen Mercedes SUV led police on a dangerous chase across Los Angeles, tossing a firearm from the window before fleeing on foot.

The driver of a stolen white Mercedes SUV led Los Angeles police on a high-speed pursuit across the city on Tuesday evening, according to nbclosangeles.com.

The Los Angeles Police Department said the chase began at approximately 5:30 p.m. near the intersection of Sherman Way and Woodman Avenue in North Hollywood. Officers established that the driver had stolen the vehicle and was armed. During the pursuit, the driver discarded the firearm out of the vehicle's window.

The suspect weaved through peak-hour traffic, moving on and off freeways as he travelled through the San Fernando Valley and parts of West Los Angeles before heading toward downtown. On surface streets, the driver ran red lights and drove on the wrong side of the road in an attempt to lose officers.

On the 110 Freeway approaching downtown, the vehicle cut dangerously close to other motorists as it threaded through heavy traffic.

The chase ended at the intersection of West 8th Street and South Olive Street, where the driver pulled into a parking structure and abandoned the vehicle. Three occupants — one man and two women — then fled on foot.
