An officer with the Baltimore County Police Department was admitted to a medical facility after being hit by a projectile during a violent encounter on Sunday morning in a community west of Baltimore.

The episode began shortly before 9:00 a.m. when emergency dispatchers fielded a call about an individual acting suspiciously along a pathway on Milford Mill Road. The caller reported that the person was indecently exposing themselves to passersby.

Upon reaching the area in the 900 block, the responding officers were met with live ammunition directed at them. During the ensuing firefight, one officer was wounded. The law enforcement personnel discharged their own weapons, striking the purported attacker. A member of the public who happened to be nearby was also hurt during the exchange.

The injured officer was rushed to University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center. Healthcare providers assessed the officer's injuries as severe, though the officer remained awake and responsive. The officer has been part of the force for roughly a year and a half. Officials have chosen not to release the officer's name at this time.

The person believed to have opened fire was apprehended and is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital.
