The deadly encounter occurred around 9:30 a.m. on Monday at a transit stop located near the intersection of Darnestown Road and Quince Orchard Road. Authorities had responded to reports of an individual brandishing a firearm at the location.
When officers arrived, they encountered a man who appeared to be loading ammunition into a handgun. Police opened fire, striking the individual. Emergency responders rushed the man to a nearby medical facility, where doctors pronounced him dead.
