A law enforcement officer in a small Franklin County community has been fired and taken into custody following accusations of inappropriate behavior while working.

Lake Royale Police announced that Officer Samuel Marcum was dismissed from his position and arrested on Wednesday.

According to legal documents, Marcum allegedly disposed of his body-worn recording device by throwing it into Lake Royale. The action was reportedly intended to conceal evidence that he had engaged in sexual activity inside his patrol vehicle during his shift.

Initially, Marcum told investigators that he had misplaced the camera during severe winter weather. However, he later changed his account, admitting in a statement on June 6 that he deliberately discarded the device in the water. He claimed he acted out of fear of professional repercussions after permitting his romantic partner to enter his patrol car.

Marcum now faces several criminal charges, including hindering an official investigation, providing false statements to authorities, damaging government equipment, and engaging in conduct unbecoming of a law enforcement officer.
