Canton suspect arrested in Stow after stabbing, two chases and gunfire
Google News MT — Crime (en) reports that Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers arrested Julius Edwards, 39, of Canton, on Tuesday night following a violent sequence of events that began with a stabbing early that morning and ended with a crash in a Stow residential neighbourhood.
Canton police were called at approximately 6 a.m. to a home on 15th Street SW after a mother reported her daughter had been stabbed by her boyfriend. Officers arrived to find the 33-year-old victim stabbed 15 times, with blood throughout the property. She was conscious but unable to speak and was transported to Aultman Hospital. A trail of blood leading to the driveway led investigators to suspect Edwards had driven away from the scene.
While officers were collecting evidence, a voice identifying itself as Edwards came through the home's doorbell camera. The voice stated he had wanted to kill the victim and believed he had done so, according to the Canton police report obtained by 19 News.
The U.S. Marshal Service issued a be-on-the-lookout for Edwards in connection with the attempted murder. That evening, around 7:30 p.m., Flock traffic surveillance cameras registered a hit on the vehicle Edwards was driving on Darrow Road in Hudson. Troopers attempted a traffic stop, but Edwards fled.
During the pursuit, Edwards ran a red light at Terex Road, causing a serious crash involving multiple victims. He then fled on foot, firing at a trooper as he ran. The trooper returned fire. No troopers were reported injured at that stage.
Around 8:30 p.m., troopers located Edwards driving a stolen silver Chrysler Town & Country, which he had carjacked. A second attempt to stop him failed, triggering a further chase involving multiple law enforcement agencies that lasted approximately ten minutes.
The pursuit moved onto the grounds of Fox Den Golf Course before entering a Stow neighbourhood. Edwards ultimately crashed into a Summit Metro Parks cruiser near Saybrooke Boulevard and Bunker Lane, causing it to roll over in a residential yard. The Metro Parks officer suffered minor injuries.
Stow resident Sam Nowak captured footage of the pursuit on his mobile phone. Neighbours told 19 News reporter Vasi Prokos they were watching television when they heard the crash and sirens, and looked outside to find multiple police cars and officers moving through their yards.
Edwards exited the crashed vehicle and attempted to flee on foot but was taken into custody by Stow Police. He is currently held at Summit County Jail.
