Hit-and-run driver kills 72-year-old woman at red light in South Philadelphia

A 72-year-old woman was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver in South Philadelphia late Monday. The suspect vehicle was later found in Northeast Philadelphia, but the driver remains at large.

Philadelphia police are searching for the driver who struck and killed a 72-year-old woman in a hit-and-run on South Broad Street late Monday night, 6abc.com reports.

Officers responded to the intersection of S. Broad Street and Oregon Avenue at around 11:30 p.m. on Monday and found the woman unresponsive on the roadway. She was transported to hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Surveillance footage captured the incident. A light-coloured SUV travelling westbound on Oregon Avenue ran a red light and struck the woman as she was crossing in the crosswalk, then fled the scene.

"This woman was crossing on the crosswalk. And she was crossing — she had the green light, according to our cameras and witnesses — and the vehicle that struck her went through a red light and then struck her," said Chief Inspector Scott Small of the Philadelphia Police Department.

The force of the impact was severe enough to knock the victim out of her sneakers and throw her approximately 100 feet. Crash investigators recovered broken car parts and what is believed to be a headlight lens at the scene.

By Tuesday morning, police had located the vehicle they believe was involved — found in the 2700 block of Northview Street in Northeast Philadelphia. The search for the driver, however, continues.
