Brooklyn shooting kills 24-year-old in East New York building entrance
According to nydailynews.com, Jarell Sutton, 24, was shot dead in the vestibule of a three-storey apartment building on Euclid Ave. near Pitkin Ave. in East New York at around 12:10 a.m. on Tuesday.
Sutton was struck in the chest and transported by medics to Brookdale University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.
A second man, also 24, arrived at the same hospital independently with a gunshot wound to his foot. He was treated for what police described as a minor injury.
Residents of the building told police that neither Sutton nor the second victim lived there. The shooting took place in the small vestibule between the building's front door and the lobby entrance.
The building owner, who identified himself only as Sam, said at least part of the incident was captured on surveillance cameras. Officers were reviewing that footage to establish the sequence of events and identify the shooter.
Police said Sutton had lived roughly eight blocks from the scene, though former neighbours at that address said he had moved out with his family approximately a year ago.
One former neighbour, who did not wish to be named, described Sutton as reserved. "He's quiet. He's quiet," the neighbour said. "He would say, 'Hi, what's up?' and just go about his business." The neighbour added: "I'm sorry to hear [what happened]."
Sutton had accumulated several prior arrests, law enforcement sources said. Most recently, in December, he was charged with drug offences after being stopped for urinating in public, during which police allegedly found ten Ecstasy pills on him. In October 2022 he was arrested on gun and drug charges, and in January 2024 he was taken into custody after being found in a stolen vehicle containing crack cocaine and heroin.
All three cases were still active in Brooklyn Criminal Court at the time of his death. Police had not established any clear connection between the shooting and his alleged criminal history.
