The Puerto Rico Department of Justice filed charges this week against Carmen Rodríguez Colón, a woman accused of killing her former partner Pedro Cruz Santiago on March 3 in Morovis.

Authorities charged Rodríguez Colón with first-degree murder and weapons law violations. A judge set her bail at $150,000, which she could not post, and she was remanded to custody.

The suspect had previously claimed she acted in self-defense, alleging that Cruz Santiago had repeatedly threatened her life. Following her arrest in March, Rodríguez described a pattern of alleged abuse she endured from the man. She shared photographs showing injuries she said he had recently inflicted on her.

Rodríguez stated she feared for her life, claiming Cruz Santiago had told her he would do the same thing his brother did — referring to a case last year in which the brother killed his own partner at a police barracks in Morovis.

According to the allegations, Rodríguez shot Cruz with a firearm she was licensed to carry. He died while being transported to a medical facility.

Text messages shared with Telenoticias revealed ongoing problems between the couple, who had been together for approximately 30 years. Both the suspect and the victim have prior criminal records.
