A man accused of gunning down a 29-year-old in a Ralston parking lot was tracked down and detained in Iowa by federal and local authorities.

Federal marshals and Iowa police have detained a 45-year-old man believed responsible for a fatal shooting at a Nebraska gas-station lot, WOWT reports.

George Hatfield was located inside an apartment close to where Mynster Street meets North 7th in Council Bluffs. U.S. Marshals commanded him to come out, and officers from the local department took him into custody peacefully.

He was lodged at the Pottawattamie County jail on a single count of fleeing justice. No other accusations were filed against him in Iowa; extradition proceedings to return him to Nebraska are pending.

The deadly encounter unfolded shortly after dawn on Thursday. In the lot of a Kwik Shop at 72nd and Q, Ralston officers found 29-year-old Shane Krantz sprawled on the asphalt, bleeding from a gunshot. Paramedics rushed him to hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries.

Early inquiries suggest Krantz became embroiled in a dispute with someone inside a different automobile before shots rang out. Several neighboring law-enforcement bodies — Ralston, Omaha, La Vista police and the Douglas County Sheriff — converged on the site.

The probe is continuing.
