Former UFC champion Dustin Poirier was taken into custody this week at an airport in Atlanta, Georgia, following a heated confrontation with a police officer. The 37-year-old American fighter, who retired from mixed martial arts last year after a 16-year career, was released on bail after the incident.

Body camera footage released by authorities shows Poirier in a visibly intoxicated and agitated state at the airport after being removed from his flight. As the officer attempts to calm him down, the former champion can be heard cursing and saying: "I'll fight you right now." The situation de-escalated when the officer drew his taser, at which point Poirier backed down.

Reinforcements arrived shortly after, and Poirier then calmed down. He fist-bumped the arresting officer and told him: "Great job, you did what you could."

Following the arrest, Poirier posted on social media about the difficulties he has faced since stepping away from competition. He acknowledged that he is at a point where he needs help, stating that while leaving fighting behind has not been easy, alcohol is not the answer. He added that he watched alcohol destroy his father's life and will not let the same happen to him. Poirier said he will do everything he can to get his life back in order for the sake of his family.

Poirier debuted in the UFC in 2011 and competed in 32 bouts for the organization. Though he never captured an undisputed title, he is widely regarded as one of the best lightweight fighters of his generation, with victories over Conor McGregor, Max Holloway, and Justin Gaethje. He is also known for his charitable work in his home state of Louisiana, where his foundation supports underprivileged children.
