Fresh evidence surfaced in a Utah courtroom during the preliminary hearing of 23-year-old Tyler Robinson, who stands accused of killing conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The key witness was Robinson's former roommate and partner, who testified that the defendant admitted to shooting Kirk and later broke down in tears, saying he wished he had not done it.

According to the witness's recorded statement, when he met Robinson the day after the killing, he asked whether a text message the defendant had sent was true. Robinson confirmed it was, began to cry, and expressed regret. He then tried to busy himself with various tasks, as if attempting to distract his own mind.

The witness, identified as Lance Tuigs, has been granted immunity from prosecution in exchange for cooperating with authorities.

Prosecutors presented text messages exchanged between the two men shortly after the murder. In one message, Robinson allegedly wrote: "I had the chance to take Charlie Kirk out of the picture and I did it. I wish we lived in a world where this wasn't necessary." When asked if he was really the perpetrator, he reportedly replied: "Yes. Sorry." Asked why, he allegedly answered: "I had enough of half of him. There is a half that cannot be dealt with through negotiation."

The court was also shown messages in which Robinson described hiding the rifle in bushes after changing clothes, waiting for police presence to decrease so he could retrieve it. He wrote that he sat in his car watching videos on his phone while commenting that police dogs may have already located the weapon.

For the first time, prosecutors released photographs of the murder weapon, a semi-automatic rifle, along with images of bullets and casings bearing engraved phrases. Shell casings found at the scene carried inscriptions such as "If you read this, you are gay" and "Fascist! Catch!" A casing with the words "Test Shot" was also found at Robinson's residence.

Authorities allege that Robinson fired a single shot to the neck of 31-year-old Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA and close ally of Donald Trump, while Kirk was speaking at a gathering at Utah Valley University. Kirk was transported to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Robinson faces charges of premeditated murder and other offenses. He has not yet entered a plea.

The preliminary hearings aim to determine whether sufficient evidence exists to proceed to trial, during which prosecutors are also considering whether to seek the death penalty.
