Matthew Sanchez, 23, a police officer employed by the San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD), has lost his position after being arrested on 14 May on a charge of deadly conduct, ksat.com reports. The charge stems from an off-duty incident that took place in November 2025.

According to an arrest affidavit, Sanchez was out socialising with a group of friends — including at least one fellow school police officer — when the situation turned dangerous. He had been ejected from a dance club after becoming intoxicated and vomiting. The group then moved to a parking lot near the intersection of Northwest Military Highway and Wurzbach Parkway.

While seated in the passenger seat of his own vehicle, Sanchez reportedly retrieved a firearm from the glove compartment and began waving it out the window, at one point pointing it directly at a friend. That same individual also told San Antonio police that Sanchez had offered him cocaine during the incident, though the friend said he took it from him and discarded it in the grass.

The November incident did not surface until May 2026, when the San Antonio Police Department was already investigating a separate case involving Sanchez. At that point, the friend told investigators that Sanchez had been behaving "erratically" since that night — including during working hours around children.

KSAT 12 News contacted SAISD with a series of questions about Sanchez's employment status. Laura Short, a district spokesperson, confirmed in an email that SAISD is aware of the off-duty incident and that Sanchez "is no longer with the district." Short declined to specify where he had been stationed, whether he was dismissed or resigned, or the precise date of his departure.

When asked about the second off-duty school officer who was present that night, Short said the investigation remains ongoing.

Court records indicate Sanchez had been held in custody since his May arrest before being released on 1 June after posting bond.
