A law enforcement officer was shot and a robbery suspect also suffered bullet wounds following a vehicle pursuit that ended in an exchange of gunfire in San Francisco on the night of May 31.

Around 10:30 p.m., police received word that an automobile connected to a robbery was crossing into the city from the Bay Bridge. Patrol units soon located the car, carrying two people, moving along 5th Street close to Folsom Street.

Officers tried to halt the vehicle near Mission and First Streets, but the person behind the wheel sped off instead. A chase through urban roads followed, ending when the car broke down near the junction of Bayshore Boulevard and Jerrold Avenue.

At that point, the driver stepped out and began firing at the pursuing officers, according to the San Francisco Police Department. During the return fire, both Officer Brittney Taylor and the passenger riding in the suspect's car were hit. Fellow officers transported both injured individuals to a medical facility.

The motorist, later identified as 36-year-old Norris Reed, was apprehended at the scene. Two pistols were found in his possession. Prosecutors have filed two attempted-murder charges against him, along with several other felony accusations.

State correctional records show Reed had been free on parole for approximately half a year after completing a prison term of over 14 years for kidnapping and grand theft committed with a firearm. The passenger in the vehicle was also taken into custody.

Authorities report that Officer Taylor remains under medical care as she recovers from her wounds.
