Detectives in Sanford are trying to determine what linked a discharge of firearms and an automobile wreck that occurred at a residential property on Wednesday.

Officers in Sanford, North Carolina were called to a residential property near a major highway early Wednesday after reports of both shots fired and a traffic wreck.

The event covered multiple areas of the Oak Branch Lane housing development. Investigators confirmed that gunshots rang out on one portion of the grounds. Elsewhere on the property, a sport utility vehicle struck three unoccupied parked cars, including a cruiser belonging to the Lee County Sheriff's Office. The SUV showed heavy damage to its nose and flank.

Video footage revealed numerous patrol units at the location, with numbered placards scattered along a street and parking area as forensic teams attempted to establish a timeline.

A medevac aircraft had been requested but was stood down before arrival. Authorities did not say how many people were connected to the incident or whether anyone suffered harm.

The case is still active, with few details made public.
