Arizona Democratic Senator Ruben Gallego is under federal investigation for suspected campaign finance violations, axios.com has reported.

The probe, handled by the Department of Justice, originates from a whistleblower complaint filed out of Southern California, according to a source familiar with the investigation.

Gallego's team has rejected the inquiry as politically driven. "Trump is targeting Senator Gallego while the most weaponised Department of Justice in history is turning a blind eye to Trump's unprecedented corruption," a spokesperson for the senator said in a statement to Axios.

The investigation could weigh on the freshman senator's political ambitions. Gallego has been mentioned as a potential candidate for the 2028 presidential race, and the scrutiny from federal authorities threatens to overshadow his early national profile.

Gallego has denied any wrongdoing and has previously stated that allegations against him were politically motivated.

Earlier this month, Axios had already reported that Gallego hired former Biden administration deputy press secretary Andrew Bates to manage crisis communications, covering potential dealings with the Senate ethics panel as well as fallout from his association with former Representative Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.).

The Senate Ethics Committee has separately dismissed a complaint filed against Gallego, according to NPR. The DOJ investigation, however, remains active.
