Deputy killed, suspect at large after welfare check turns deadly in Carroll County

A Carroll County sheriff's deputy was shot and killed Friday in Hillsville, Virginia, after a man opened fire on officers conducting a welfare check, ABC News US reports.

The Carroll County Sheriff's Office said a family member had requested the welfare check at the home. When deputies arrived, the man inside opened fire. Both deputies were struck by gunfire.

"One deputy sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased. The second deputy was struck in his ballistic vest and is currently receiving medical evaluation and is reported to be in stable condition," the sheriff's office said in a news release.

The name of the deputy killed was not immediately released. A search for the suspect remained underway Friday, with law enforcement officials warning the public that he should be considered armed and extremely dangerous.

Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger said her office was closely monitoring the situation. "I encourage anyone with information on the suspect's whereabouts to contact Virginia State Police," Spanberger wrote on social media. "My thoughts are with the deputy's family and the Carroll County Sheriff's Office as we work through this awful situation."
