The trial of a young woman accused of fatally stabbing a teenager in Puerto Rico commenced Tuesday morning with the selection of jurors at the Aibonito courthouse.

Anthonieska Avilés Cabrera and her mother, Elvia Cabrera, both face charges in connection with the death of Gabriela Nicole Pratts. The younger defendant's trial began with the process of choosing 12 jurors and six alternates who will evaluate evidence against her.

Defense attorneys raised concerns that extensive media attention could hinder the ability to seat an impartial panel. Despite this objection, the selection process moved forward as scheduled.

The fatal encounter occurred shortly before midnight on August 11, 2025, near the Roberto Colón detour. What began as a dispute between young women escalated into a deadly knife attack on the victim, according to case details reported by Telemundo Puerto Rico.

Both mother and daughter were previously found to have probable cause for all charges against them. Each was assigned bail set at $1 million.

Avilés Cabrera faces counts of homicide and violations of weapons laws. Her mother's trial on the same case is proceeding separately. The younger defendant will be tried before a jury.

Proceedings were scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m.
