A New Castle resident aged 41 was detained following a narcotics probe that yielded roughly 127 grams of suspected powder cocaine, according to a statement from state law enforcement.

Investigators with the Special Investigations Unit began looking into John Dupree II early last month after receiving intelligence suggesting he was moving sizable quantities of cocaine and crack cocaine throughout two Delaware counties. Detectives learned he intended to complete another sale on June 29 at a shopping plaza in New Castle.

That afternoon, around 3:40 p.m., surveillance teams watched Dupree pull into the plaza parking area. When officers moved in and commanded him to step out, he allegedly stayed put and kept reaching around the interior while disregarding instructions. Personnel eventually breached the vehicle and secured him without additional conflict.

A subsequent inspection of the car turned up the suspected illicit substance. Investigators also believe Dupree attempted to alter or conceal the material while barricaded inside.

He was transported to a nearby troop station, formally charged, and presented before the Justice of the Peace Court. He was then remanded to the Department of Correction pending payment of a $51,100 cash bond.
