The US Supreme Court on Monday rejected President Donald Trump's effort to overturn a $5 million civil verdict finding that he sexually abused and defamed writer E. Jean Carroll, axios.com reports.

Trump expressed surprise at the decision. "Surprisingly, the Supreme Court declined to 'review' a Fake Case brought against me by a woman I never met," he wrote on Truth Social, adding that "a decades old celebrity photo line, standing with her husband, does not count."

Roberta Kaplan, Carroll's attorney, told Axios in an emailed statement: "Today's Supreme Court decision affirms once and for all the jury's unanimous verdict that President Donald J. Trump sexually assaulted and defamed E. Jean Carroll."

The Supreme Court's rejection closes this particular case, though Trump's legal team has separately requested an appeals court reconsider a ruling requiring him to pay Carroll an additional $83.3 million. An appeals court upheld that judgment in September, finding that Trump had made defamatory comments about the writer.

Trump has consistently denied wrongdoing, alleging that Carroll made false, politically motivated accusations against him. Monday's decision marks the latest in a series of legal setbacks for the president in his years-long effort to have the Carroll verdict dismissed.
