Teenager Arrested in San Rafael for Attempted Murder Following June Shooting
An 18-year-old local resident has been taken into custody in connection with a firearm assault that left a man hospitalized in northern California earlier this week, the San Rafael Police Department announced.
Diego Alejandro Diaz Flores was apprehended on the morning of July 2 during an operation carried out by the Marin Regional Crisis Response Unit, working alongside San Rafael officers. The arrest took place at a dwelling in the city's central district.
The case stems from an altercation that erupted on June 26 at roughly 1:26 p.m. near 40 Louise Street. Authorities received emergency calls reporting an active physical confrontation combined with gunfire. When officers reached the location, they found a 28-year-old male with wounds to his upper body caused by bullets. Fire department medics rendered assistance before rushing the injured party to a nearby medical center, where he continues to receive treatment in stable condition.
What triggered the violent encounter remains unclear, though detectives are probing various angles, including the possibility that street gang connections may have influenced the events.
Video footage retrieved from cameras in the neighborhood proved crucial to the inquiry. The recordings documented both the verbal dispute and the moment shots were fired. Investigators noted that the weapon involved bore an unusual appearance—it featured multiple colors—making it easier to identify.
The following day, patrol officers pulled over a vehicle on the 800 block of Third Street. Inside, they spotted the same vividly colored pistol lying in plain sight on the rear floor of the passenger area. The driver, a male minor who was alone in the automobile, was immediately detained and later placed in juvenile custody on weapons charges. Further examination revealed that this adolescent had been present when the June 26 shooting occurred and maintained ties to Diaz Flores.
By combining the surveillance recordings with assistance from neighborhood residents, the police department's investigative team established Diaz Flores as the individual who fired the weapon. Following his apprehension, a search of his home yielded further proof connecting him to the crime.
Diaz Flores now faces allegations of attempted murder under California Penal Code sections 664 and 187. He is being held at the Marin County Jail.
Law enforcement officials credited the case's relatively swift resolution to strong community relationships and public willingness to share information and provide access to private security systems.
The inquiry remains active. Anyone with knowledge about this matter is asked to contact San Rafael Police at 415-485-3000 or submit tips through the department's website.
