A suspect was fatally shot by Birmingham police officers outside UAB St. Vincent's Birmingham hospital on Thursday afternoon, wgxa.tv reports. Authorities have not yet disclosed what prompted the use of deadly force.
According to Birmingham Police officials, officers were responding to a complaint at around 12:35 p.m. in the 2700 block of University Boulevard when the encounter ended with the suspect being fatally wounded. Police have not identified the suspect or provided details about the nature of the original complaint.
Investigators said they are working to establish the full circumstances of the shooting using "multiple sources," and that additional information would be released as it becomes available. Officers did not take questions at the Thursday afternoon news briefing.
Earlier in the day, the UAB Hospital system issued a B-ALERT notifying the public of an officer-involved shooting outside the facility. The alert instructed people to avoid the North Tower area and Level A of the parking deck, while confirming the scene was secure.
UAB subsequently confirmed that no patients or staff were injured or involved in the incident. "We are grateful that no patients or employees were involved or injured in today's incident," the health system said in a statement. "The scene is secure, and there is no active threat to the UAB St. Vincent's Birmingham campus."
Multiple law enforcement units responded to the scene, and crime scene tape was placed around part of the area. The Jefferson County Coroner's Office confirmed it had been notified of a death and dispatched a deputy coroner to gather information. At the time of its initial response, the office said it did not yet have details about the circumstances surrounding the death.
The investigation remains ongoing.
