A convicted felon is in custody after deliberately driving into a marked K-9 police vehicle head-on in Puyallup, Washington, setting the patrol car ablaze, police1.com reports.

The incident unfolded on 29 August when an officer attempted to pull over a vehicle travelling the wrong way on a one-way street in downtown Puyallup. The driver, suspected of being under the influence, refused to stop and fled.

A second officer later spotted the vehicle and initiated a pursuit leading through downtown towards River Road and North Meridian. Officers lost sight of the suspect near that intersection, and no units were actively following the vehicle at the moment of the collision.

Moments later, the suspect turned onto the bypass in the wrong direction and deliberately struck a marked patrol car head-on. The vehicle belonged to a K-9 officer who was travelling to assist in the pursuit, with his police dog on board.

The impact caused the patrol car to catch fire. Both the officer and his K-9 partner managed to exit the vehicle before the flames spread. Responding officers used multiple fire extinguishers to bring the blaze under control.

Neither the officer nor the dog sustained injuries.

Investigators reported observing suspected drugs, firearms and ammunition in plain view inside the suspect's vehicle. The car was seized pending the execution of a search warrant.

The driver was arrested and booked into Pierce County Jail on multiple felony and misdemeanour charges. His name had not been released at the time of reporting.
