Man fatally shot near Archie Spigner Park in Jamaica, Queens; gunman at large

A 49-year-old Long Island man was fatally shot near Archie Spigner Park in Jamaica, Queens, on Friday afternoon, qns.com reports. The victim, identified as Richard Carter of South Cottage Street in Valley Stream, had been attending a funeral at the Greater Allen A.M.E. Cathedral of New York at 110-31 Merrick Boulevard when he was struck by gunfire.

Officers from the 113th Precinct responded to a 911 call at approximately 2:20 p.m., after reports of a shooting near the intersection of Merrick Boulevard and Sayer Avenue. Arriving officers found Carter with multiple gunshot wounds to his torso. EMS transported him to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Homicide detectives are working to establish a motive and determine whether Carter was specifically targeted or an innocent bystander, according to the NYPD.

A law enforcement source familiar with the investigation said the gunman was last seen riding a Citi Bike northbound on 170th Street toward 111th Avenue. The suspect was described as wearing a DKNY jacket over a multi-colored sweatshirt and orange sneakers. No arrests have been made, an NYPD spokeswoman confirmed.

The killing marks the second murder reported by the 113th Precinct so far this year, compared to one during the same period last year, according to the most recent CompStat report.
