A couple from Nibley, Utah, has confessed to the prolonged torture and death of their 18-month-old daughter, Ruby Murray. Mitchell Murray, 31, and Carrie Murray, 32 — who worked as a nurse — pleaded guilty to aggravated child abuse and negligent homicide, according to Bild.

On March 19, 2025, Carrie Murray called emergency services but refused to perform first aid on her child, claiming nothing could be done to help. During later police questioning, she insisted the death was sudden and expressed no remorse, stating it was "Ruby's time."

Investigators quickly uncovered the appalling conditions in which the toddler had been kept. The infant's crib was filthy and littered with old food remnants. The parents sometimes left the child confined for days without removing her. Diapers were rarely changed. Loud rock music from bands including Green Day and Fall Out Boy disrupted the baby's sleep. A space heater running too hot stood beside the crib.

Forensic examiners determined the child died from dehydration and malnutrition. The parents had subjected Ruby to "excessive heat, darkness, confinement, and sleep deprivation in an inappropriate manner," court documents revealed.

Prosecutors in Cache County initially charged the couple with murder as well. Those charges were dropped after the parents admitted to the abuse and negligent homicide counts. Sentencing is scheduled for September 21. Each parent faces up to 15 years in prison per charge, meaning a maximum sentence of 30 years each.
