Donald Trump pays $5.6 million to E. Jean Carroll after civil liability finding for sexual assault

Former US president Donald Trump has paid 5.6 million dollars to writer E. Jean Carroll following a civil jury verdict that held him responsible for sexually assaulting and defaming her, according to a court filing made public on Tuesday, July 14.

The payment stems from a definitive judicial decision issued after the Supreme Court declined at the end of June to review an appeal filed by Trump. A federal judge subsequently ordered the transfer of the funds during the past week. The underlying incident dates back to 1996, when Carroll alleges the Republican president assaulted her inside a fitting room at a major New York City retail store.

Carroll's attorney, Roberta Kaplan, announced in a statement that her client had received the compensation awarded by the jury in the May 2023 ruling. The writer, now 82 years old, first made the accusations public in a 2019 book. After the allegations surfaced, Trump publicly called her "mentally sick" and claimed she had fabricated a "phony deal."

In a separate defamation proceeding in New York, Trump was ordered to pay Carroll an additional 83.3 million dollars. That judgment was upheld on appeal, though its enforcement remains paused pending a possible Supreme Court review.
