16-Year-Old Charged With Murder in Bronx Playground Shooting That Killed Woman, 23

Teen Arrested at Parole Hearing in Bronx Shooting Death of Reyna Caceres

A 16-year-old boy has been charged with murder in the shooting death of Reyna Caceres, 23, at a Bronx playground — a killing in which her brother may have been the intended target, NY Post Metro reports.

NYPD's Warrants unit apprehended the suspect during a Tuesday parole hearing. Caceres was shot in the left eye just after midnight on May 28 on Aqueduct Avenue near West 181st Street in University Heights. She was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital in critical condition but did not survive.

Because the suspect is a minor, his name was not released. In addition to murder, he faces charges of aggravated manslaughter, criminal possession of a weapon, and reckless endangerment, according to police.

Law enforcement sources told NY Post Metro that Caceres appeared to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. The gunman is believed to have targeted her brother, who is listed as a person of interest in three other shootings. Investigators are also examining whether the violence was gang-related.

A second suspect remains at large. It is unclear which of the two fired the fatal shot, sources said.

The arrested teen had a prior firearms arrest. He was taken into custody in September for allegedly discharging a weapon on a Bronx street and faced a reckless endangerment charge at that time, sources said.

Caceres lived approximately half a mile from the scene. Family and friends remembered her on a GoFundMe page launched to cover funeral expenses as "a smart, funny and kind person" who took her role as an older sister seriously.

"Reyna was an incredible older sister to her three younger siblings," the page stated. "There is nothing in the world she would not do for them. She loved them more than anything in the world."

The investigation is ongoing.
