Globally Ranked Skateboarder Faces Felony Charges After Midnight Platform Attack

A 19-year-old Illinois skateboarder currently ranked 266th in the world was arrested and charged with felony battery after allegedly striking a man with a skateboard at a Metra train station in Crystal Lake, according to reports.

Gabriel R. Schuch faces one count of aggravated battery in a public place and one count of aggravated battery causing great bodily harm, according to McHenry County court records. The alleged attack occurred around midnight at the station on the 100 block of Woodstock Street in downtown Crystal Lake, roughly 45 miles northwest of Chicago.

Officers were dispatched after a 911 caller reported being battered by someone known to them. First responders found the victim with significant injuries and transported him to a local hospital.

"During the investigation it was determined that the suspect used a skateboard to strike the victim in the head during the incident," the Crystal Lake Police Department said in a press release.

Illinois State Police located Schuch around 1:55 a.m. in Lansing — approximately 75 miles southeast of Crystal Lake — and took him into custody without incident.

Defence Cites Earlier 'Vicious' Attack; Prosecution Says Assault Was Unprovoked

At a hearing before 22nd Judicial Circuit Court Judge Christopher Harmon, Schuch's attorney reframed his client as the aggrieved party, according to courtroom reports.

The defence argued that the victim had previously carried out a "vicious" attack on Schuch, and that Schuch had not reported it to police because he feared the man would kill him. According to the defence, the two had not interacted since that earlier alleged incident until the night in question — a meeting both lawyers described as a chance encounter.

The accounts diverged sharply from there. The prosecutor cited a witness who was present with the victim, who reportedly told investigators that the two men recognised each other and made eye contact but exchanged no words, describing the moment as "awkward." The prosecutor said Schuch then boarded the same train on a different car and ran up behind the victim, striking him with the skateboard "unprovoked."

Schuch's attorney countered that his client feared for his life upon seeing the man. He also challenged the prosecution's account of the attack's direction, telling the court that the nature of the victim's injuries suggested he had been struck from the front — not from behind.

A criminal complaint obtained by court records states that Schuch struck the victim "in the head and face with the wheels/axel of a skateboard."

Skull Fracture and Brain Bleed; Defendant Released on Monitoring

The prosecutor told the court that the victim sustained a fractured skull and a brain bleed, injuries serious enough to require admission to the intensive care unit.

Schuch's defence attorney described his client as a professional skateboarder with a clothing line, a YouTube channel, and steady employment. His global ranking of 266th was noted in court.

Judge Harmon released Schuch under court supervision with an ankle monitor and a no-contact order with the victim. The judge addressed Schuch directly before closing the hearing.

"Let me make this clear, Mr Schuch… I would recommend you don't even think about [the victim] going forward," Harmon said.

Schuch is scheduled to return to court on 9 July.
