Actor James Handy, 81, stabbed to death in Tarzana by girlfriend's son

Actor James Handy killed outside Tarzana home, suspect arrested

Character actor James Handy, 81, was fatally stabbed Wednesday morning outside a residence on the 19200 block of Erwin Street in Tarzana, California, according to NY Post Metro. He was found unconscious in the front yard, suffering multiple stab wounds to the chest, and was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

The call that drew police to the scene was a chilling one: the caller stated, "I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin," authorities said.

Shortly after officers arrived, 44-year-old Michael Gledhill allegedly flagged them down and identified himself as the person they were looking for, according to an LAPD news release. Gledhill is the son of Handy's girlfriend and had been living with his mother at the home at the time of the attack. He was arrested on a murder charge and bail was set at $2,000,000.

The motive behind the attack remains unclear.

Handy's career in film and television spanned more than five decades, accumulating nearly 150 credits on IMDb. He began working in the 1970s and most recently appeared in "Top Gun: Maverick," playing a bartender named Jimmy. He also had a role as an exterminator in the 1995 cult classic "Jumanji," alongside Robin Williams, Bonnie Hunt, Kirsten Dunst, and Jonathan Hyde.

His television work included appearances on "The West Wing," "9-1-1," "NCIS: Los Angeles," "CSI: NY," "The Young and the Restless," "Criminal Minds," "Cold Case," "Without a Trace," "ER," and "The X-Files."
