An 81-year-old character actor known for roles in major Hollywood productions was found stabbed to death outside his Tarzana residence earlier this month, and the man now in custody is the son of his longtime partner.

James Handy sustained a fatal knife wound to the chest during the afternoon of June 3, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Emergency crews transported him to a nearby hospital, where medical personnel pronounced him dead.

The individual taken into custody has been identified as Michael Gladhill, 44, who shared the home with his mother and Handy. Authorities say Gladhill himself placed the emergency call that brought officers to the scene.

During the 911 conversation, Gladhill reportedly told the dispatcher: "I am the son of a human being, I just killed a sinful person." When police arrived, they discovered Handy unconscious in the front yard of the property.

Following the incident, local streets were sealed off while investigators conducted a search of the area, including visits to neighboring residences. Gladhill allegedly informed arriving officers that he was the individual they were looking for.

He was booked into jail and formally charged with homicide. Bail has been set at two million dollars.

Handy, a New York native, built a screen career spanning several decades with appearances in numerous films and television series. Audiences may recognize him from productions such as "Jumanji," "Unbreakable," "Logan," "NYPD Blue," "NCIS: Los Angeles," and "Criminal Minds." He also appeared as a bartender in "Top Gun: Maverick."
