A motorist suspected of assaulting a tow truck driver was shot and wounded by law enforcement early Friday following a pursuit that started on a major Los Angeles-area freeway and concluded at a gas station in Covina.

California Highway Patrol troopers were called to the eastbound 210 near Grand Avenue around 3 a.m. after receiving a disturbance report, according to The New York Post. They encountered a white utility vehicle being driven in a reckless manner. The operator was believed to have attacked a tow truck driver on that same highway segment.

The driver refused to stop when officers attempted to pull him over, prompting a chase. The pursuit moved off the freeway, with the vehicle traveling south on South Citrus Avenue before stopping at a Fuel Club station located at 110 Arrow Highway.

Gunfire erupted at the gas station location. Footage from the scene revealed numerous spent cartridges scattered on the pavement. A handgun, a magazine, and extra rounds were found by detectives, per KNN.

The suspect suffered wounds and was taken by ambulance to a local hospital. No officers were hurt during the incident.

The shooting triggered a complete shutdown of eastbound 210 lanes between Grand Avenue and Sunflower Avenue. A SigAlert went into effect at 3:50 a.m., and congestion stretched back to CA-39/Azusa Avenue. Commuters experienced wait times approaching 60 minutes. One traffic reporter suggested using the 10 Freeway instead.

Officials provided no estimate for when the thoroughfare would reopen to traffic.
