Trump pays $5.6 million to E. Jean Carroll after sexual assault and defamation verdict
US President Donald Trump has paid 5.6 million dollars to writer E. Jean Carroll, according to court documents made public. The payment follows a civil jury verdict that found him liable for sexually assaulting and defaming the former Elle magazine columnist.
"Today, we are pleased to announce that (E. Jean Carroll) received the compensation awarded to her by the jury following that decision," her attorney Roberta Kaplan stated. The verdict dates back to May 2023.
At the end of June, the Supreme Court declined to review an appeal filed by Trump, effectively making the judgment final. A federal judge ordered him to pay the amount during the past week.
Carroll, now 82 years old, had accused Trump of attacking her in the dressing room of a New York department store in 1996. When she went public with her allegations in connection with the release of her book in 2019, Trump called her a "very stupid woman" and referred to the matter as a "con job."
In a separate case in New York, Trump was also found liable for defaming Carroll and was ordered to pay 83.3 million dollars in damages. An appeals court upheld that decision, though the final amount will depend on whether the Supreme Court agrees to hear the matter.
