Trump pays $5.6 million to E. Jean Carroll after sexual assault and defamation verdict
Former United States President Donald Trump has paid 5.6 million dollars to writer E. Jean Carroll, complying with a civil jury verdict that found him responsible for sexually assaulting and defaming her. The payment was confirmed by Carroll's attorney, Roberta Kaplan, through a court document made public.
"Today, we are pleased to announce that (E. Jean Carroll) received the compensation awarded by the jury following that decision," Kaplan stated, referring to the May 2023 ruling.
In late June, the Supreme Court made the verdict final when it declined to review an appeal filed by Trump. A federal judge then ordered him to pay the amount during the past week.
Carroll, now 82 years old and formerly a columnist for Elle magazine, had accused Trump of attacking her sexually in the dressing room of a New York department store in 1996. When she published these allegations in connection with her book release in 2019, Trump called her "corrupted" and described the case as "fabricated."
In a separate defamation lawsuit in New York, Trump was also ordered to pay Carroll 83.3 million dollars. The appeals court upheld that decision, though the final amount will depend on whether the Supreme Court agrees to examine the matter.
