Grand Island men face felony charges after victim left with severe head injuries
Prosecutors charged two Grand Island men with first-degree felony assault on Wednesday following a downtown beating that left the victim hospitalised on a ventilator, ksnblocal4.com reports.
Jesus A. Reyes, 23, and Angel G. Vega, 23, were both charged in connection with the assault on Matthew Bishop, 41, also of Grand Island.
Officers responded late Sunday night to a report of a male victim lying face down with severe head injuries near the Tattered Book in the downtown area. Bishop was taken to CHI St. Francis Emergency Room before being transferred to a hospital in Omaha.
GIPD Division Chief Dean Elliott told Local4 that Bishop remained alive but in critical condition, on a ventilator with what Elliott described as "severe disabling injuries."
Investigators identified Reyes and Vega through video evidence. Elliott said the footage showed the two men leaving a bar across the street from where Bishop was located, then approaching him. An argument followed before Bishop was assaulted, according to Elliott.
Court records confirmed the felony charges were filed Wednesday morning. The Grand Island Police Department said its investigation is ongoing and is asking anyone with information to contact GIPD at (308) 385-5400 or Grand Island–Hall County Crime Stoppers at (308) 381-8822.
