Utah Man Arrested for Anti-Muslim Stabbing at Shopping Center
A 48-year-old man was taken into custody in West Valley, Utah, after repeatedly knifing a Muslim vendor and telling officers he wanted to murder people because of their faith, according to Reuters, via Agerpres.
The assault occurred on Monday inside the Valley Fair shopping center. The victim, who worked at a booth there, suffered numerous stab wounds across his body and was bleeding heavily when emergency responders arrived, local authorities said.
Before police reached the scene, several shoppers managed to tackle the attacker and pin him to the ground. The suspect, identified as Peter Michael Larsen, was also hospitalized for injuries sustained during that restraint.
Officers said the suspect openly admitted he "planned to kill Muslims" and that he posed "a substantial danger to the public if released, given his violent actions." Court documents show he approached the victim, asked his name and religion, then requested to buy a bottle of water. When the vendor turned to grab the item, the attacker began stabbing him repeatedly, according to Imam Shuaib Din of the Utah Islamic Center, who had been in contact with the victim's family.
The wounded man was hospitalized in critical condition. Larsen was placed in preventive detention in Salt Lake County, facing charges of attempted murder and unlawful use of a dangerous weapon.
Incidents targeting Muslims have risen significantly since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States, and more recently amid the Israel-Hamas conflict that began in October 2023.
