Armed suspect arrested after 12-hour standoff on apartment rooftop in Portland's Hazelwood

A man who held a woman inside a Portland apartment for nearly 12 hours was arrested after climbing onto the roof and swinging down via a tree branch. Domestic violence charges are expected.

An armed man who refused to surrender for nearly 12 hours was taken into custody on Friday after a prolonged tactical incident at an apartment in Portland's Hazelwood neighbourhood, portland.gov reports.

Officers from the East Precinct responded at 5:37 a.m. on 5 June 2026 to a report of an armed man preventing a woman from leaving his apartment (case number 26-162961). A safety perimeter was established, area residents were asked to shelter in place, and Northeast 122nd Avenue was closed in both directions between Northeast Halsey Street and Northeast Holladay Street.

At approximately 8:00 a.m., the adult female victim left the apartment unharmed and was received by officers. The male suspect remained inside, believed to be armed with a firearm.

The Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) made repeated attempts to persuade the suspect to give himself up. When those communications failed, officers deployed flash-sound distraction devices, CS gas, and OC vapour. Following the gas deployment, the suspect climbed onto the roof of the apartment building. A forward CNT negotiating team continued efforts to bring him down, but he refused.

Portland Fire & Rescue responded to a Portland Police Bureau (PPB) request for assistance and used a bucket truck to lift a team of officers — in full armour and gear — safely to the roof. When officers confronted him there, the suspect grabbed a branch from a nearby tree and swung down to the ground, where a K9 unit and multiple members of the Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT) were waiting. He was immediately taken into custody and referred to medical services for evaluation.

The suspect's identity will be released after he has been booked into jail. Detectives from the Special Victims Unit are leading the investigation, and domestic violence charges are expected to be filed.

The PPB acknowledged the contributions of Portland Fire & Rescue and East Metro SWAT, describing both as critical to the outcome. Northeast 122nd Avenue was set to reopen to traffic shortly after tactical teams finished clearing their vehicles and equipment from the scene.
