A house search in Vinton County, Ohio, uncovered 16 young people between the ages of one and 18 living in appalling surroundings surrounded by waste and excrement, according to a briefing by local agencies.

Investigators suspect the group of minors had been kept in one space of just under 24 square meters for a period of roughly four years. The minors have since been given medical care and moved to safety.

County prosecutor William Archer stressed that youngsters in the wider community are not at risk. He ruled out trafficking, characterizing the episode as confined to the household itself.

Officers detained the mother, father, and both grandparents. Each is being held on bond of $300,000 — around 241,000 Swiss francs — while enquiries proceed.
