A 40-year-old man and his 41-year-old wife from Michigan face homicide charges following the death of their seven-year-old son, who suffered fatal heart failure brought on by severe obesity and alleged parental neglect.
Damien O'Brien and Jessica O'Brien were arrested this week and are also accused of child abuse and torture in connection with the boy's death. Their son, Casper, had never attended school and had reportedly seen a doctor only once in his life, according to the Genesee County prosecutor David Leyton, who spoke to WJRT.
Casper was taken to a Michigan hospital in November 2025, where doctors diagnosed him with dilated cardiomyopathy, a condition that causes heart failure. Pathological obesity was identified as a contributing factor. At the time of his death, the child stood 1.27 metres tall and weighed 115 kilograms.
Leyton described the case as "hard and extreme suffering" caused by the parents' negligence. Despite the father working and the family holding health insurance, the couple allegedly failed to seek adequate medical care for the boy. On the morning Casper died, the parents called a veterinarian to treat their dog rather than obtain emergency help for their son, the prosecutor noted.
The couple also has a five-year-old daughter. Neither child was known to local authorities; Child Protective Services had never visited the home, Leyton said.
